Is that Jesus?

The other night after girl scouts, I noticed one of the girls looking at a picture in the equipment room.  The picture was old, it was one of the ones that we used to see every Sunday when I was a child to go with that days story.   You could just see the wheels turning in her head and she said, "Mrs Stephanie is that Jesus?" before I could answer her one of the other girls did, "Yes, that's him right there" and pointed to the taller man in a robe...The first child kept staring at it and then I knew what was next..."Mrs Stephanie is that what he really looks like?" Again the other child in the room answered and this time rather exasperated, "Yes, of course that is exactly what he looks like!" and then she left the room.  So I walked over to A as she was still really studying the picture and I said, "A that is what someone thinks he looks like, we haven't seen him so we don't know that is EXACTLY what he looks like" I could tell that got those wheels turning even faster and after a short pause she said, "But is that exactly what you think he looks like?" So I bent down beside her so I could see her eyes and said, "you know he was not here in the United States he was over on the other side of the world where there skin is darker than this picture, not as light as me and not quite as dark as you"  And then you could see the sweetest lightbulb moment and with a huge smile she said, "Ms Stephanie don't you think its really cool that his skin looks like yours and mine!!  You know I love him a lot!"  I quickly assured her, "A he loves you a whole lot too!"  I just love those light bulb moments with kids, it makes my heart smile!
